The Librarian Escapes
By Janice Broderick
One of my goals for the last year was reading the Bible from cover to cover, rather than a book here or a chapter there. It is, after all, a complete narrative, a history of God's people. We wouldn't start a history book in the middle or at the end. We could miss many events, key events that help us to understand a future battle or episode. Maybe that is why people say, "The Bible doesn't make any sense."
An analogy I heard at a Bible study made me think. What if your love wrote you a letter, but you never read it. What would he think? How would you know how he felt? We would not think of not reading a letter someone sent us. One thing that kept me focused on reading the Bible was listening to it. Sometimes I listened while working in the house. Sometimes I sat
and followed along in my Bible. The more we are able to read the Bible cover to cover the better able we are to place and understand the Sunday scripture, a verse chosen for a devotional, or a particular book chosen for an in-depth study. The important thing is - just do it. Get it done. There is a set of Bible tapes in the library narrated by my favorite reader, Alexander Scourby . There is also a tape player. Borrow it - listen to it - then return it for the next person.
