HISTORY |
As early as 1806 a few Baptist men were meeting at one another's homes to worship the Lord. They wanted to build their own church, but did not have the funds to do it. After talking with town leaders they decided to work together. A building was erected which they could both use. The original building was a school for the town and a church for the Baptists. On September 5, 1809 the Baptists organized a society. Their first meeting house was built in 1816 on the corner of what is now Granite street and Mt. Vernon Street. As the congregation grew they needed a larger church. They built the present United Methodist Church in 1836. By 1874 they built a large gothic structure on South street where the Bank Of New Hampshire is today. In 1957 the Church and Society incorporated as a single body, The First Baptist Church of Milford, NH. By 1968 our large building was in need of repair and the membership was diminishing. In 1970 the members voted to build a brick Church. The land was donated by members in that neighborhood on West street. Within a few years we added many new members and new leadership. First Baptist is a Church where Jesus is Lord, there is an open door to all, and salvation and the fullness of God's Spirit are proclaimed and offered. |
